PROJECT 1: THE CENTRAL VIKINGS CHESS PROJECT
Cricket and football have been the main traditional sports in Trinidad. Today, however, there is a myriad of sporting activities to chose from depending on a person’s particular interest. Sport is the perfect mix of recreation and education, having both physical and intellectual components. Beyond exercise, sport can teach the importance of discipline, fairplay, teamwork, strategy and achievement. These acquired social skills can assist persons in becoming well-rounded individuals capable of dealing with life’s challenges.
Chess has always been considered the most intellectual of recreational pursuits. Its infinite permutations and combinations allow the player to develop intrinsic, creative solutions to outmanoeuvre their opponent. It refines the art of temporal and spatial thinking, concentration, strategy and problem solving, thereby imparting success on and beyond the board. The provision of dedicated facilities to assist in the specialised development of game in Trinidad and Tobago will not only result in even a higher standard of play and an expansion of the game among the youth, but will provide numerous positive spin-offs, prerequisites for building an intelligent nation.
The Central Viking's Chess Project, formerly the National Chess Training Centre, is committed to expanding chess among youth. ESTT is pleased to partner with the Central Viking's chess club in this endeavor.
UPDATE January 05.03.06
The project is entering its fifth year and we continue to build on past achievements. Samantha, who we coached for about six months, is the National Under 14 female champion. Renuka is equal in skill but she doesn't compete as much. Samatha's brother Keanu (7 years) has a persistent and skillful attack for his age and I expect great things from him in the future. Roland placed 2nd in the National Under 18 and Bjorn placed 3rd in the Under 14 category. These boys have stuck with the programme and now are achieving their deserved success.
At the end of the day, whether they compete or not, win or not, the only thing that really matters is they develop their self esteem and analytical abilities...which was the real goal. I am very proud of all my students.
PROJECT 2
HIGHLIGHTING NGOS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS ONLINE
Local NGOs and community groups, based on volunteerism, have been instrumental in the provision of social services gratis for decades. Most perform admirably with limited resources and limited membership. Although the value of their work will never be forgotten by the persons whose lives they touch, the wider community is often unaware of their dedication and generosity.
We would like to highlight all local social organisations on our Friends section. We hope that it would make the general public more aware that there are many compassionate people in Trinidad and Tobago who dedicate themselves to greater causes. We also hope that if you find an organization which appeals to you, that you may join the organization, to help them grow stronger. "Together we aspire, together we achieve".
If you belong to a local social organisation, or know of one, not listed, send us details and your contact information at empowermentt2001@yahoo.com. This project will only be successful through the efforts of people like you viewing the website. help us "lend a hand" to those who
